SF Edge Closing Its Doors This Sunday…Death of SF Institution – Take Two

I just saw a flurry of conversations on Facebook that the Edge, on 18th and Collingwood, is closing its doors. Apparently the new building owner isn’t allowing them to renew their lease.

This brings up a the topic of the evolution of gay culture, moving away from bars. Last month my post on the death of the SF Eagle sparked some great conversation on this topic.

Guess we should all say our goodbyes this weekend. Or not? Tell me what you know.

    • I AM VERY SAD TO SEE THE EDGE CLOSE!! I WILL MISS THE CUSTOMERS!! THE “‘NEW’ MGT WAS ALL WRONG FOR THIS GAY NEIGHBORHOOD BAR !! THE FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER WAS LOST UNDER THEIR REGIME AND REPLACED WITH AN ARROGANCE !! SORRY BUT ITS TRUE AND IS A BELIEF WIDELY SHARED !! I MIGHT KEEP BRUCE AND MIKE AS BARENDERS BUT REST I WOULD DISMISS !!! CHANEG IS GOOD AND PROVIDES A CLEAN UP OPPORTUNITY THAT I HOPE THE OWNER DOESNT MISS !!

  1. It was amazing to watch the internet come alive this morning with the news of The Edge closing. I hesitate to call this a “trend” as change is indeed the only true constant in life. Everywhere you look, there is a thai restaurant where a dry cleaner used to be, or a shoe store where a pharmacy used to be. Bars are not museums or cultural centers. They are a business and just like any business there is rent to be paid, taxes due or in this case, a lease that expires.

Change is happening all around us. The internet has changed the way we cruise for sex and the way we interact with our “friends”. Facebook gives us a sense of community. Young people today are coming of age in a society that is more accepting and in turn, they are more accepting of each other. The youth of today are much more fluid in their ideas of sexuality and gender roles. Gone are the days of catering to a sub group within a sub group. Segregating people because of how they dress, the color of their skin, their age, their weight, or gender is not the future. Gone are the days of hiding behind windowless walls to protect ones privacy. Gay bars used to be safe havens…. The only place gay men and women felt free to be open and honest with themselves and each other. That is a role that is no longer required. Thank goodness.

This is not the first time change has come to our community. AIDS closed scores of bars in San Francisco. Entire gay neighborhoods disappeared. 20 years ago, everyone was young because everyone that came before us was dead. Changes in medicine keep us alive today. Thank goodness. But as we age we stay home a little bit more. We put another log on the fire, go to bed a little bit earlier, fall asleep in front of the TV a little more often. We prefer our dogs over people. Before you know it, another bar changes hands or closes all together. We change, so why do we expect nothing else to?

Watching the conversation unfold today on Facebook I couldn’t help but think: 20 years ago, this conversation would be happening in a bar…

    • AMEN TONY !!! SO TRUE AND BEAUTIFULLY PUT!!! I APPRECIATE THE COMPLETENESS OF YOUR COMMMENTS!!! GAY BARS ARE BECOME A THING OF THE PAST AS THEY PROBABLY SHOULD BE !!! THE GAY COMMUNITY WOULD BE BETTER OFF KEEPING THEIR MONEY AND SAVING AND INVESTING !!

  2. The Edge was a lesbian oriented bar in the 80s so it seems the evolution continues. It was an excellent place to get drunk, sing loudly, make new best friends for the next hours or two etc. It was also pretty much the last vestige of the Castro clone-ethos. Good times were had at the Edge but most of them cannot be retrieved in memory for obvious reasons. Belch!

  3. change is good and so called new mgt there should of been shown the door a long time ago !!!! the customers are not people that report to her or to the bartenders and she was clueless as to deliver the service customers expect !!! good riddance !! new mgt and new bartenders are what is needed !!!

  4. NICE BAR BUT TOO MANY LOSERS !!! MANY MANY OF THE CUSTOMERS THAT FREQUENT THE EDGE HAVE NO EDUCATION, NO PROFESSONS AND THEY ARE SPENDING ALL THEIR MONEY AT THE BAR !!! TIME FOR THE GAY COMMUNITY TO GET IT TOGETHER BECAUSE NO ONE IS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF YOU AND THE BAR OWNERS ARE VERY WEALTHY AND DONT GIVE A RATS ASS WHAT BECOMES OF YOU !!! WAKE UP!!!

  5. im happy that someone told the truth about these bars and how they destroy the gay community as the owners make massive profits and dont care about what they do to our community
