14 years before RuPaul, the first drag race in Australia: living XXXL a retrospect

Fourteen years before RuPaul told her first guest to Sashay Away, an Australian Mardi Gras tranny tradition bloomed on the famed Bondi Beach. Each year the gender bomb explodes in the sunshine as Drag Queens compete on the beach.

Created by Sydney drag star Vanessa Wagner the Bondi Drag Races are where kings and queens battle it out for the ultimate crown.  Sydney’s drag kings and queens emerge from the nightclubs to compete in the sun and sand of world famous Bondi Beach at the hilarious Drag Races.

In 2011 I was able to catch the tail end of the event. Because it was coming to an end I was only able to snap six shots. Thankfully all captured a moment interesting enough to share.
